GMA Schools Officially Closes the Grasya sa Basura Ecosavers Program for the School Year 2010-2011
The Solid Waste Management Association of the Philippines (SWAPP) and Coca-cola Foundation formally concluded the implementation of the Grasya sa Basura Ecosavers Program in GMA in a closing ceremony that was held on March 28, 2011 at the Legislative Building of the Municipality of GMA, Cavite. The closing ceremony was the culmination of more than a year of hard work for all those who were involved in the implementation of the program, especially the teachers, school administrators and the junkshop partners who participated in the program.
The closing program was graced by Vice Mayor Precival Cabuhat, several Municipal Councilors and the MENRO chief, Mr. Michael Templonuevo. Vice Mayor Cabuhat congratulated the teachers and the students for a job well done and commended the local schools for their efforts at helping the Municipality in its cleaning and greening efforts. Also in attendance was Coca-cola Foundation President Cecile Alcanatara and SWAPP Executive Director Lizette Cardenas who gave congratulatory messages of support and encouragement for the participating schools.
The experience of the 5 schools implementing the Grasya sa Basura Program in GMA, Cavite showed that the Ecosavers Program can be successfully replicated. SWAPP Executive Director Lizette Cardenas spoke of the valuable experiences and lessons learned in the implementation of the program in San Gabriel I Elementary, San Gabriel II Elementary School, Area J Elementary School, General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School and Holy Family Academy and how important it is to share these experiences to other schools. The most active student and teachers were also given recognition. The best school in participation and recyclables recovery were also given recognition. San Gabriel I Elementary School and the Holy Family Academy bagged the Award by garnering the highest rate of participation and recyclables recovery in their respective schools.
Although the program has officially closed, the Local Government of GMA, through its MENRO office is set to continue and expand the program to more schools in the Municipality. The Department of Education Division of Cavite also is keen on replication the program in other Cavite schools.
